Can I live on Margarita
Island and do I need to apply for residence?
Anyone can own property on the Island regardless
of their nationality. You do not need to apply
for a visa just fill out the card they give you
on the airplane.
There is no need for a residence visa to live on the island but you will
need to renew your visa every 3 months. If you
plan to live permanently on the Island you
need to apply for a Venezuelan residence visa.
There are two forms of residence visa: the
residencia and the transeśnte. The transeśnte
is a 1-year visa that has to be renewed each
year, and after 5 years of the transeśnte visa
you can apply for a residencia visa.
You will have to go to Caracas and visit
ONIDEX (Oficina de Identificacion y Extranjeros)
to apply for your residence visa and to renew
your transeśnte visa , you should
apply for the initial transeśnte visa at the Venezuelan consulate
in your home country. The cost of travelling to
Caracas, lodging, meals and other expenses will
be far more than ONIDEX charges you to process
the paperwork.
If you do not speak Spanish fluently, you are
better off hiring a bilingual lawyer to help you
with the process of handling your application.
The offices of ONIDEX are not in a good part of
Caracas, and it is not advisable to go there
without someone who could provide help and keep
you out of trouble.
Venezuela does not make it easy to get
residence, and they don't care that the process
is daunting. This has created occasional
less-than-legal opportunities because some
people are willing to pay a few thousand dollars
to an official to skip the transeśnte process
and issue a residencia visa. This allows the
holder to obtain a Cedula (national ID card),
which makes doing business a whole lot easier.
With that kind of money on the table, officials
occasionally accept bribes to "streamline" the
process of obtaining a visa.
Are there modern facilities on the Island?
Margarita Island has all the facilities you
would expect from a vibrant holiday island. It
has large modern shopping centres, with well
known stores such as Bulgari, Versace and Tommy
Hilfiger (all of which enjoy duty free status).
There are a great number of restaurants and
bars, many specialising in seafood and a large
variety of international food is also available,
including Japanese, Chinese and Argentinean
cuisine. The island offers an excellent choice
of hotels including five stars hotels with
casinos. Cinemas, cultural centres, museums,
amusement and theme parks can also be found. The
island also has an international airport,
several marinas and is a favourite stop off
point for cruise ships. |
